What are essential oils?

Essential oils (EO's) are volatile aromatic compounds that are extracted from plants; from the leaves, flowers, barks, seeds, roots, stems, peels, etc. Basically, it's the life force of the plant that gives it its characteristic aroma and composition. Each plant carries unique chemical constituents that support and interact with our body systems in various ways. Scientist are constantly learning and discovering new constituents and how they play a vital role in our health.

How are essential oils used?

Essential oils can be used aromatically, topically, or internally.


Also known as aromatherapy. Essential oils can be inhaled a few different ways.

  1. Directly: straight from the bottle
  2. Indirectly: place the oil on a cotton pad, felt pad, reed, or cloth which is then released into the air and inhaled.
  3. Diffuse or nebulize: this method uses a machine to create a fine mist that disperses eo's and water throughout the air. Another way is to add a drop of eo to water while showering or in a hot mug of water and breath the in vapor.

Another way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils is to apply it directly onto the skin. The oils can be applied neat (without a carrier oil) or diluted (eo mixed with fatty carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil). Most essential oils should diluted generously to allow for more efficient absorption into the skin. Please note that essential oils are extremely potent and should be used one drop at a time and always dilute especially for children or for sensitive skin. Never put essential oils in your eyes or ears. If it happens accidentally, flush with a carrier oil, not water.
